Contemplating on a Contemplative Life

After a short blimp the past months, I am back to my discernment. I hope I can focus now, now that I have learned so much about human nature. But then, I always revert to the virtues, be it Catholic or Buddhist, that guide me in my decisions in life and relationships with others. I learned that in the excess of empathy I stubbornly and stupidly put my life (and my face) in danger in an effort of trying to save a life. Why do I always sacrifice my own desires for the happiness of others?

When I was in high school, I imagined myself as a religious nun. The thought of entering a life of service has not left me. That thought turned into desire; and the desire has grown stronger. And so did the calling which has become even more persistent. Years ago, I was already preparing to join the Claretians but I was told that I was young and simply heartbroken. The convent is not a place to escape pain and heartache.

I was then invited by 4 groups, including from Sr. Mary John who said to me, “Sr. B used to work in media too. Now she’s here, she decided to join us.” Also Sr. Cres, when I was in St. Joseph for the Save Sierra Madre Campaign, also almost had me convinced to join them.

I haven’t decided yet which group to join. I have yet to convince myself that I have learned enough from this worldly life. But that is impossible because there is so much to learn!

This (unofficial) discernment period has been going on for quite a long time now, and the requirement methinks is at least one year. I thought I had a better plan: learn as much about the world and in between I can do my discernment. It’s not as good a plan as I thought it was because there were also other kinds of invitations as well.

I can’t tell what the future holds. But no matter what vocation I choose, I will continue to be an activist and to serve others and not be reined in contrived, blindly and half-heartedly by a group, a belief, or a relationship. And like Ayn Rand she wrote: I guard my treasures: my thought, my will, my freedom. And the greatest of these is freedom.’

Butuan Genealogy

“At the Tampuda (conference/gathering) at Sibawan Panamin Reservation in Misamis Oriental on July 11, l974 Datu Mandahinog, grandson of Datu Mansumilao, told Dr. Angelus Villanueva Rosales Tupaz that the VILLANUEVAS are his relatives.

Their great grandfather, DATU MANSIBAWAN of Bukidnon married a Higaonon princess of the Talaandig tribe of Misamis. They had 13 children; the eldest was DATU MANKALASI who married a native of Mindulao (now Gingoog and part of Magsaysay, Mis. Or.) They had four sons and 2 daughters. Two of the heir apparents were Mansumilao and Mambusilao who got married to women of the Higaonon tribe of the MANGASETA group of Agusan. Their offsprings were the MANDALISAY and MANDILANTO tribes (Tex Delanto of Pareja subdivision, a former BIR Examiner and Author of the biography of DOPLAZA – belongs to the Mandelanto group)

A daughter of MANKALASI married a Chinese trader named OKUY BU TAO of Gingoog; they had 10 children. One of the girls, JACOBA BUTAO married a “Dagatnon” – FRANCISCO VILLANUEVA.

Mankalasi expanded his datuship towards Carmen up to Pinamanculan and Bancasi (original name was Mankalasi) and established a community of other wives.

JACOBA BUTAO and FRANCISCO VILLANUEVA begot nine children, namely:

1. Alejandro married to Paula Dumago

2. Angel married to Narcisa Piencenaves

3. Demetrio married Antonina Radaza

4. Eduardo who married Jacoba Aviles

5. Gregorio married Felipa Conde

6. Roman his spouse was Alfonsa (family name NA)

7. Blaza married Bernardo Calo

8. Rosa got married to Bautista Calo

9. Trinidad was married to Clemente Calo

Illigimate children of FRANCISCO and using their mothers’ family name

1. Juana Burdeos was married to Margarito Torralba

2. Macaria Cassion was married to Elegio Atega

3. Andrea Ato married Bonifacio Cocon

4. Marcelo Bustillo (spouse name is NA, but had

a son, Amado Bustillo)

The notes of Tio Desiderio (Deong) Curilan Villanueva indicate that he started his search of the Villanueva clan when he was in third year high school as part of a school project. His sources of information were reliable as his grandfather, ALEJANDRO BUTAO VILLANUEVA and grand uncle GREGORIO BUTAO VILLANUEVA were then available. So with his father FRANCISCO DUMAGO VILLANUEVA and his second cousin ROQUE VILLANUEVA SANCHEZ. From his research it is shown that the Villanuevas and Lopezes of Iloilo are linked like brothers EUGENIO and FERNANDO LOPEZ and PURA VILLANUEVA, the FIRST CARNIVAL BEAUTY QUEEN OF THE PHILIPPINES and got married to TEODORO KALAW of Batangas. One of their children was MARIA KALAW KATIGBAK who became a Senator. There are also linkages of this clan to Italy, England and Latin America.(Pasagdan nato ini)

The Butuan Villanueva-Butao clan was established more than 200 years ago by FRANCISCO and MARIA VILLANUEVA, brother and sister team, from Iloilo (Jaro and Molo). FRANCISCO VILLANUEVA married JACOBA BUTAO (mentioned earlier). MARIA married EUSEBIO BUTAO, brother of JACOBA BUTAO. Here’s what Tio Deong said, “Incidentally, FRANCISCO VILLANUEVA established the town of Butuan and during his term as Capitan del Pueblo, Magallanes, the former site was getting too small and too far for the growing community which has opened farms up the river as far as Amparo, Bit-os and even Kubo, Esperanza. They made a town centrally located and with space for the expansion. The Capitan del Pueblos are still honored today in the name of streets such as F. Villanueva St., T. Calo St., Rosales St., and Montilla St. to mention a few.”

The children of Francisco and Jacoba Butao Villanueva were earlier mentioned.

EUSEBIO BUTAO and MARIA VILLANUEVA begot the following children:

1. Geronimo V. Butao

2. Eulalia V. Butao

3. Antonina V. Butao

4. Rufina V. Butao

5. Rita V. Butao

EULALIA married SIMEON LARA of Gingoog. Some their descendants are Vicente B. Lara, former Congressman of Misamis Oriental. Amor married. Gov. Carlito Fortich of Bukidnon and Grace married San Victores. Fortunato B. Lara married an Irish mestiza, Victorina Saluper, begot five daughters:

1. Perla who married Cesar Sangco, former Army Officer

and retired MTC Judge;

2. Betty, married to General Oscar Rialp

3. Judith, married Charlie Deen, PAL pilot

4. Ruth, married to Teofisto Guingona, Jr., frmr. VP

5. Annie, the youngest – no info.

To facilitate easy comprehension of the complex relationship between and among the kins, particularly in the Butuan/Agusan area, although might not be complete – in which case someone can provide infos – I will attempt to simplify tabulation.

Eve said, “God granted me more offsprings in place of Abel because Cain

slew him.”

“Seek Where You Belong.”, Serrano clan of Jabonga,

Agusan del Norte

It was only after I finished 2 years ago the draft-chart on the genealogy of Jesus did I have a better perspective on the complex relationships of the Biblical characters.

For example there were 42 generations from Abraham to Jesus excluding Adam’s to Noah’s before Abraham’s. There were 2 Jacobs; the first, was the husband of Leah and Rachel and, son of Isaac and Rebecah. Joseph, the first, was the son of Jacob and Rechel (2nd wife) and became Governor of Egypt after he was sold by his brothers. The other Jacob was the son of Matthan and, father of Joseph, the husband of Mary – Jesus’ mother. On many occasions, Egypt was the refuge of the Jews. Jacob, the father of Joseph – Mary’s husband- was the 32nd great grandson of Perez who was the son of Judah (son of the first Jacob) and his widowed daughter-in-law, Tamar, widow of Er and Onan, sons of Judah and Shua. Tamar, pretended to be a harlot and seduced her father-in-law. No incest law that time. Most biblical characters were descended from Seth, the third child of Adam and Eve, because Noah was the only son of Seth who was allowed to live with his family after the great flood. .

Moses was already old when he wrote the Old Testament when Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had been long gone. He relied his information from the priestly. yahwists. elohists and traditions.

Because of the difficulty in writing the genealogy when the writer is already not too young, it is suggested that the present generation begin to do their own.

In writing the genealogy of Francisco and Jacoba Butao Villanueva my sources mostly come from the notes of my uncle Desiderio Curilan Vilanueva. In preparing the Romano Rosales and Ignacia Bokingo genealogy I relied on my personal knowledge and informations from Asuncion Dumanon Manlapaz, Salvador Busa Fortun – both on their 80’s -, Gwen Fortun, Angelus R. Tupaz, Bobby Rosales, Salvador Flores Viray, Deojilda Demain Gogo and kids, Georgie Dumanon Abellar (remarried to a Megue, a chef of the White House, a Sta Maria and now a Cruz), Ester Corvera, Rafael Libarnes, Apolonio Rosales, Porcelio Rosales, Nora Rosales, Ester and Baby Bokingo Rosales, Rosario Bokingo Plaza and our daughter Johanna who did the leg work and provided me information thru the internet.

Romano’s name does not appear in Rocky Flores’ online genealogy of Fr. Telesforo dela Pena aka Fr. Telesforo Nepomoceno; therefore it is difficult to determine if he descended from the priest. He may came from Cebu together with Andres Rosales – 2 time elected town mayor/presidente de pueblo of Butuan – the great grandfather of Atty. Artemio Rosales and Belino Rosales whose wife is Narcisita Grana Jandug. Mana Vering Pacana and Mana Deming Calo are known to be descendants of Andres.

Ignacia Bokingo, spouse of Romano, was the daughter of a Chinaman – named Bo King Go – who evacuated from China during the Opium War, came and settled in Butuan, married a lovely Butuanese lady whose other children were: Faustino, Margarita, Silverio and, Alberto whose descendants are the Berays, Macalams, Plazas, Duncanos, Buyans and Rosaleses of the original townsite – Banza. Romano and Ignacia belonged to the same generation as Francisco and Jacoba Butao Villanueva.

Okuy Bo Tao, chinese trader of Gingoog was the father of Jacoba Butao. Somebody told me that Okuy, means dark; Bo Tao, no husband or wife.

Not art, just stuff on my bed

I’ve been obsessing on those studyblr, gradblr posts on Tumblr for quite some time now. Well, even before studyblr was invented, there was that thing called journal writing. Oh yeah, then came bullet journaling. But this is on a different level, my friends. Studyblr actually an attempt at studying. Let’s just say it’s an approach at studying. The first step in studying is getting into the mood to study. So you buy nice and expensive school supplies — the whole set of highlights, and the highly recommended Muji notebooks’ smooth paper that matches perfectly with those equally expensive Muji gel pens where they glide easily on. Next, you download study playlists, and a pomodoro app to keep cool and study on. Then the actual studying begins. You read your readings and make notes. You color code passages that you think needs highlighting. I use all six colors, though sometimes I do not strictly follow my color code rule. It’s just pretty to see the pages suddenly become more colorful and thus more cheerful. You also use different colors for your notes, for example, bright pink for headings, dark green for names and dates, orange for comments and questions, and blue for actual notes. Of course, you’re free to put add-ons like drawings of swirls and twines, flowers, leaves and smiling swines. But I found stickers to be much easier to do and neater to look at. And suddenly, I’m back in time to when I was in first grade! Who says studying makes you grow old and weary?!

Anyway, as you can see in this picture, it just shows my failed attempt at contributing to the study motivation project. It’s just humiliating. This photo of my stuff is no way going to motivate anyone. Should I put a hashtag no filter? Well, I don’t do selfies either. I tried before, but my face looks better behind the camera.

This post is just me procrastinating. So don’t take this seriously. (Except for the recommended school supplies, I swear you’d love them.)

PS. If you’re wondering what that colorful tapes are for, I use it to tag book pages. I write on those tapes instead on the book itself. It’s easier and cleaner to just remove the tape than using correction tape or fluid in case I make mistakes. It also saves me the embarrassment of lending the book to someone and find my notes stupid and handwriting ugly.

The Covenant Monument: A Representation of Nature, Unity and Renewal

The Covenant Monument: A Representation of Nature, Unity and Renewal

The Covenant Monument, by Professor Emeritus Nestor Vinluan, was erected in 2016 within the grounds of Quezon Hall in the University of the Philippines. Etched on its plaque is its reason for being: as a symbolism of the covenant of leaders and citizens with the nation and the world for renewal, unity, peace, and prosperity.

The Covenant occupies the space beside Quezon Hall. Nearby edifices are the College of Music, the Film Center, the UP Theatre, the Carillon, the Ampitheater, and the College of Mass Communication. It is accessible and visible from the street fronting the College of Music. As you traverse the concrete street towards the grass covered earth and into its space among the trees and bushes, you can see spheres strategically placed to depict the colors and flag of the Philippine nation — three spheres: one in red, one in blue, and the other as the sun is in yellow; and three white crossed circular forms to represent the stars. As these forms define and mark the space of the nation, the experience of reality and awareness of spatiality however becomes transforming the moment you walk inwards. Once inside, you enter the space of the transcendental, an abstraction of reality as we know it.

The use of abstraction in The Covenant to depict reality of the natural world —the elements of water, earth, and sky — are in the shape of biomorphic forms and lines such as the spheres and wavy lines. Art historian Ruben Cañete wrote in article that the sphere and mandala have been the recurring themes used by Prof. Vinluan since the 1970s. He has used biomorphic forms to allude to the natural world, and geometric forms to allude to the metaphysics and the mystical. But here, in The Covenant, Prof. Vinluan has achieved a unity of the biomorphic forms with the purposiveness of the mandala, but without the mandala’s clear borders and sharp lines.

From the base, which is reminiscent of the flow of water spiraling downstream towards the earth, you walk up towards the highest level, and inwards to the center of what seems to be Vinluan’s re-presentation of the sphere, a somewhat layering of white spherical form that depict either sky or earth, or maybe energy or an aura in motion that is resonating, reverberating, radiating, expanding outwards. The sphere is opened quadrantal to expose its inner core. By standing at the center, it gives you a feeling of ambivalence of both seclusion and exposition, of calmness and awakening. The four quadrants loom high enough, extending from the ground and its base to almost 8 feet tall, placed at certain angles which conceal you, as if protecting you from the outside world. While at the same time, the re-presentation of the sphere as an opened form has allowed access of view from the inside looking outward, and vise versa which exposes you from the gaze of the outsider and yet exposing the outsider from your gaze as well. As for the feeling of calmness and awakening, could it be because of the whiteness of the quadrants that reflects light stimulating sight and awakening, making things visible; and calmness because of their relative dimension that speak of stability, fixedness and constancy?

The Covenant has invited, even gravitated, people to a place maybe as a rendezvous, a place for conversation or for play. It is also maybe used to momentarily escape from the everyday, or maybe to frolic either alone, with a friend, as a couple or as lovers, or as a group or family. Sometimes, group of students would hold meetings inside the opened sphere. Most times, there would be children frolicking, playing tag or hide and seek, while their parents or guardians watch them, taking selfies and simply enjoy sitting under its shade. The space is almost always never without a mortal creature, even at night when darkness befall its surroundings. It has itself remained well-lighted, as well as the street, and provides flaneurs with benches to lounge and whilst away time. Being erected amidst the trees and breeze of natural air, the Covenant has given the people a public space and an opportunity to immerse in one’s own thoughts or with the company of others while experiencing nature — to be outside and to once again be enchanted, be awoken, and to find our place in the cosmos — an experience that many may find wanting in the urban jungle.

The Covenant also seems to entreat us to re-examine our perception and our senses; to renew our experience sensorially especially now in our contemporary society where we are being bombarded with a multitude of stimuli that dulls our senses. As Susan Sontag says, “What is important now is to recover our senses. We must learn to see more, to hear more, to feel more.” And what better place could there be to escape the noisy, vacuous, faux-stimulus of the digital world but outside with nature? And what better way of conversation could there be but an actual, physical, live, face-to-face communication and interaction with others and with nature? With that reflection, Vinluan, through The Covenant, succeeded in conveying his vision on unity and renewal, and to an extent even an experience of the divinity. As the Convenant Monument gravitates people to itself, it has harnessed its energy to promote harmony and goodness that steep, percolate, and perfuse in nature and humanity; and, a sense of wholeness, comfort, fulfillment, hope and peace that we can find from within our “self”, and amongst us as a nation, with the world, and with nature.

Explorations of the Flesh, Psyche and Spirit at the Yavuz Gallery

Explorations of the Flesh, Psyche and Spirit at the Yavuz Gallery

During the Art Fair Philippines 2018, Singapose-based Yavuz Gallery showcased works by young artists from various countries in the Southeast region. The selected artists were: Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew (Thailand), Winner Jumalon (Philippines), Yeo Kaa (Philippines), Soe Yu New (Myanmar), Johanna Helmuth (Philippines), Dharma Bum, Yani Unsana (Philippines). Looking at the displayed works, one can’t help but seek a theme. Here, it seems that the exhibit proposed different perspectives, depictions, and rendering of the flesh, psyche and spirit by presenting a selection of works that use different possible execution of forms and materials ranging from traditional oil paintings to works that use unusual objects such as tulle and faux bling.

Memory and Transformation (2015) by Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew

Thai artist Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew’s four works, all encased in glass, were on display: Absent-Minded No.1 (2017) and Absent-Minded No. 2 (2017) are two separate portraits of a child; Moment of Hope No.1 is a portrait of a woman (2017); and Memory and Transformation (2015) portrays a woman sitting on a desk. Nimmalaikaew uses two separate layers of dark tulles or dark sheer fabrics where the images are painted on to produce three dimensional, almost holographic and ghostly art works. As you investigate the image in each of his works by shifting angles and position either by walking across or back and forth, the stoic image gradually, subtly, and hauntingly comes to life. The suffering brought about by the death of a loved one can be beleaguering, making us question one’s rationality. It can put you in a dark corner of interminable melancholy, in a disconsolate and perpetual nostalgia. You seek to remember the past and long to grasp memories. Sometimes, you can evoke images of the past, images from memory by closing your eyes It is in this darkness of remembering can one see memory and in opening your eyes can you feel absence.

Winner Jumalon

Winner Jumalon

Winner Jumalon’s four large works in oil on canvass are juxtaposition of images of undressed males and females, some positioned to expose the genitals, even suggesting some figures are in the act of coitus. Strewn among the human figures are fragments of petals, twigs, a skeleton of an arm, a dismembered leg, etc. In one of his large paintings, is a skull of a ram with horns intact. The ram skull, which is also seen in his other smaller work Encuentro (2016), insinuates meaning maybe in Freudian or biblical terms. By means of defacing his works, by drawing over the images with jagged lines, scratching out the paint, by blotching and smudging, Jumalon creates an unsettling articulation on the human flesh and its performance as sexual beings. This gesture could also be a re-action as a means to obscure, conceal, repress, or maybe show confusion. However, these maybe are statements, and not attempts to conceal or obscure because he does not even spare us the occasion to approximate the imaginable. Instead he gives us raw and unconcealed view of otherwise hidden acts. There is no romanticizing of the sexual act in Jumalon’s pieces; and not also pornographic renditions of the human flesh. Instead what we can read are only sharp, scathing and sardonic statements on the libidinal as a component of human life.

by Yeo Kaa

Yeo Kaa uses anime, or that cartoon figure popular among youth and children. The larger-than-life, wide-eyed, candy pink anime girl plastic figure and a painting with the same subject are in a state of undress. The hands are in a gesture to signify confusion or uncertainty, while you look at her with the same puzzling pity at the irony in the works Kaa has conveyed. The sexualization of children in cartoon, especially in Japanese anime or manga is most prevalent nowadays. Graphic novels, cartoon on television and online are easily accessible even to children, where many would read and see characters, especially young female characters, drawn provocatively: the skirt fips, panty shots, etc.. Here, Kaa strips the character naked and appears to be asking what the viewers might have think now that they see her in a vulnerable state of nakedness. But it seems many of the viewers have not taken notice of her nakedness. Instead they pose and smile beside her to take selfies…and most surely they will post online the selfies they took with this naked and confused, cotton pink anime girl.

Blue Boy by Dharma Bum

Aside from the ghostly images, depiction of repression, confusion, and bewilderment in the sample works stated above, the mixed media work entitled Blue Boy (2017) by Dharma Bum, in contrast offers a sense of positivity and light. At the center of Bum’s work is a figure in the vrikshasana (tree pose, hands in namaste) yoga position. The whole figure is fully studded, brimming and shimmering with sequins, beads and faux bling, that seems to be in the path to enlightenment, an appearance of experiencing spiritual knowledge. But on the other hand, because of the faux bling, sequins and beads, as these materials that are meant to enhance or intensify quality to the work seems to have been overly done. This could connote a statement on the practice of an East Asian tradition gone morally depraved, corrupted by entrepreneurs. Dharma Bum seems to question the authenticity of one’s experience of the yoga exercise in the context of vast commodification of a spiritual experience.

The array of issues pertaining to the flesh and psyche in the works at the Yavuz Gallery demonstrates the complexity humans face with their reality. The questioning of the aesthetics of the flesh, where underneath the constrictions and constructions of the human body, bodily responses and reason, comes to a point when artists see the need to confound ineffable issues such as sex, sexualization, death and spirituality. The exhibit has shown how artists articulate the intricacies of human emotions, reason and psychology, the taboo on sexuality, sexualization of children, commodification and abuse of the body and spirituality — these issues that society seldom place in public discourse due to fear, rejection, ignorance, or shame.

Pushing and Pulling the Boundaries of Art History

Pushing and Pulling the Boundaries of Art History…from within: a review on Elkin’s Is Art History Global?

As the last book review requirement for the AS 240 Readings in Art History class, I wish to take this opportunity to frame the review as a reflection on the intellectual journey that this class has brought me to re-think my initial ‘strategy’ on ‘doing art studies’ — which stems on the (art historical) theories that have been influencing, forming, and affecting my personal standpoint or perspective — and, re-evaluate and reaffirm my role as a student in the Art Studies Department. I remember vividly the first day of class when Dr. Datuin asked each student, “Why are you here? Why Art Studies?”; of which my answer was a Ms. Universe-y though sincerely: “to make sense of the world”. Dr. Datuin said in her lecture on Doing Art Studies by “deconstruction…is a postcolonial undoing and challenge to existing norms”; and by challenging the western canon while trusting art historical methodologies is the direction which art studies has to face. Reading “Is Art History Global?” is also a challenge of self-reflexivity for art students as we find ourselves situated in the debate for the discipline’s place in academic institutions and its necessity in the broader context of social need which also impacts government and academic institutions’ policy and mission in education to ‘join the wave’ in the globalization of structures.

I think the main contention in the debate is the issue on “point of reference”, which Elkins identifies E.H. Gombrich’s Story of Art as one amongst the texts that acts as anchor and stumbling block that holds and challenges the direction of the globalization of art history. “Whole chains of dependence, misunderstanding, abbreviation and expansion and adaptation come from receptions of the story Gombrich tells so clearly — the very Eurocentric story that has proven so difficult to import into local contexts”, Elkins explains. (p. 124) Elkins and some participants in the seminar consider the popularization (and lack) of texts having huge influence in the forming (and non-forming?) of the narratives and thereby the pedagogies that art history in respective countries follow. The texts are responsible and fundamental in the formation of art studies starting from Vasari’s The Lives of Artists to include art methods that necessitates looking into the world in which the artwork exists and operates, just as how Baxandall has illustrated in his Paintings in 15th Century Italy. The entry of literary theories into art studies, and the texts and theories introduced by social historians, anthropologists, archeologists, sociologists, have expanded the scope of study on art from its materiality to include the sociality, thus bridging the gap of form and context towards a “contextual art history”. The definition of “art” was debated from since Winckelmann’s idealized form to art as a human product involved in the means of production and consumption. The experience of art was raised by Susan Sontag and Timothy Morton through the examination of abstraction and senses, to include other media, materials, and spaces including the environment beyond the visual and tactile senses exhibited by traditional western art forms of painting and sculpture. In the course of studying art, inquiries delved not just the ‘knowing’ but also of understanding wherein scholars search to find gaps from previous literatures and studies and discovering/realizing the excluded voices of the marginalized: the women, the ethnic people, the non-western, the queer, etc.

Elkin posing the question “Is Art History Global?” is valid and even necessary, however, not new. I think the question is an extension or putting back on the table the issues raised by post-colonial art historians especially Olu Oguibe. Maybe “Is Art History Global?” is a response to Oguibe’s suggestion to exchange a single center to a multiplicity of centers? Is Elkins proposing a universal art history but without the pains and divide caused by colonialism, by the canon? If so, are we to read art history’s western grand narratives with a sense of detachment, and regard it like an artifact of an already dead era, of outdated values? Or are we to totally disregard the western canon, but then, what is the alternative? Shelly Errington also raised the question, “suppose one did not want a way of imagining the narratives of art history as worldwide but neither Eurocentric, essentializing nor reductionist?” (p. 434 )

Recalling Oguibe’s 1993 essay “In the Heart of Darkness”, Oguibe said, “What needs to be done is to reject that peculiarization and all those structures and ideational constructs that underlie it….Otherization is unavoidable. And for every One, the Other is the Heart of Darkness. The West is as much the Heart of Darkness to the Rest as the latter is to the West. Invention and contemplation of the Other is a continuous process evident In all cultures and societies. But in contemplating the Other, it is necessary to exhibit modesty and admit relative handicap since the peripheral location of the contemplatory precludes a complete understanding. This ineluctability is the Darkness”. (Oguibe in Fernie p. 322)

Shelly Errington, opts to pin the issue on the narratives and institutions; categories and characteristics, instead on delving of what constitutes as “art”. The ‘new’ in New Art History is not just expanding other cultures and traditions to the ‘canon’ and grand narratives to ‘radicalize’, make ‘progressive’, or make it seem disrupting the western hegemony in the art history discipline and practice. Such a means, Errington says, is an “additive strategy — what anthropologists call the “fill-a-gap” or “another country heard from” method — is not the answer.” (p.431) Instead, Errington “believe(s) the intellectual center of the discipline may be at its margins — professionals deeply versed in and knowledge-able about the conventional, who push and pull it from within to new insights, perhaps using unusual subject matter.”

Is Art History Global? My answer to the question is “no”. Currently, as in now,  the art studies as we know it is not global. But my question is more on: should Art History be global? Keith Moxley said that Art History, just like the concept of art, is an inherited discipline and “part and parcel of the heritage of colonial and neocolonial experience… and to map the world according to universal principles (is a way) to continue their ambitious attempt to render the world transparent to a single point of view.” (p.208)  Because as long as patriarchy still rules in institutions, in political and social structures;  and as long as there are still unequal conditions in so far as the incapability of non-western institutions and scholars to assert their presence amongst the established, well-funded and published western scholars, globalizing art history will only cement western hegemony. There are ongoing struggles of the marginalized for publication opportunities, and even grants to fund research to include politicized discourses. It is still difficult for me to imagine an alternative. However, at the same time, I would like to see the debate for a global art history as an honest proactive move of art historians to overhaul and re-invent the existing norms. And maybe art historians at the margins will find this the opportune time to finally shout out loud and clear their proposals for an alternative art history.

Which brings me to the issue on intention or purpose: Why study art, why study art history? We go back to Kantian and Hegelian philosophies, and once more examine human in relation to nature. Pushing the boundaries is not just geographical boundary anyway but also the boundary humans placed upon themselves as human equating to “self”. And this, I believe, makes art history global…or maybe not. But that is the joy in art studies — the constant pushing and pulling of boundaries that is the very characteristic of the art discipline, the way artists and intellectuals alike explore at all the possibilities of depiction, of rendering, of creating; a course of study that is continuously and persistently critical, questioning, re-examining, and exploring new possibilities of thoughts and theory-making; of understanding; of seeing and sensing. For me, “doing art studies” is progressive, open-ended and even boundless.

Harris wrote in New Art Histories on bell hooks, on her declaring the “special quality of art activity”, of “art’s ability to transcend race and gender.” Quoting hooks: “Art, and most especially painting, was for me a realm where every imposed boundary could be transgressed. It was the free world of color where all was possible”…”a space of knowing utopian dreaming — where ‘color’ can be “free’”.  (Harris, p. 280) So maybe as   students of art studies we should start working and intervening towards the creation of that utopian space of “doing art and art studies” by pivoting, transgressing the center (Pollock), that patriarchal structure as a whole; it is only then can a global art history be possible.
